A WELL-known face in Corsham has hung up his postbag and will take a long- overdue break. Terry Akers, 65, of Clevedale Road, has worked for the postal service for 48 years and retired on Friday.
Mr Akers started his career when he was just 11 and would deliver telegrams during his lunch break and after school. He started work in Pembroke-shire, west Wales and moved to Corsham 23 years ago.
On Friday at the Corsham sorting office in Stokes Road, Mr Akers' colleagues held a leaving party and he was presented with a signed certificate from Royal Mail chairman, Allan Leighton.
Mr Akers said: "It has changed a lot over the years.
"I remember my first boss was an alcoholic who left his bottles in the sorting office. We would drink them and then go out on the rounds.
"I have enjoyed it but have been waiting 48 years and eight months for this day to come.
"The retirement party has been quite quiet. Just a few drinks, no strippers or anything."
