‘We’ve got backbone’

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 6th Jan 2006.

ASSISTANT boss Alan Reeves points to Town's permanent' spine as cause for optimism over the remainder of the campaign.

Town have haemorrhaged eight players in the last few days.

Although Andy Gurney and Aaron Brown are likely to return, Tom Heaton, Colin Heath, Patrick Collins, Neale McDermott, Petr Mikolanda and Hameur Bouazza have all departed.

Still, as Reeves points out, it isn't as if all eight players were in the side week in and week out, with the spine of the team remaining firmly in tact.

He said: "We are looking to bring in some new faces, hopefully ahead of the Gillingham game, but then I think we can take a lot of positives from the spine of the side, which is very much made up of our' players.

"If you look from the back to the front, from Rhys through the centre of defence to Stef and then Rory, they're players who are clocking up more and more experience.

"Then you've got other lads who've come into the side and are making an impression.

"You look at young Ricky Shakes and he's on fire at the moment. He's a lovely lad, he's listening and wants to learn."

Town's reserves are back in action next week when they entertain Bournemouth at the County Ground on Tuesday (2pm).
