Arrests after wheelie bin is thrown into home

From the The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald, first published Thursday 5th Jan 2006.

A WHEELIE bin thrown by vandals crashed through the window of a family's Calne home, leaving a repair bill of more than £400.

The householder, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he had seen four teenagers running away from their house in Oxford Road at about 9.45pm on December 23.

A four-paned glass window at the front of the property was smashed.

The householder said it was not the first time he and his neighbours had experienced trouble from youngsters.

The householder said: "There was a huge noise and I thought something like a wardrobe, had fallen over upstairs," he said.

"It shook the whole house. The whole of the front window had caved in.

His sons had chased and confronted youths whom they had seen running away.

"My eldest lad went out straight away and saw four lads running off down the road towards town," he said.

"My lads followed them and confronted them, but they denied doing it.

"We have had problems before with stones being thrown.

"I've already had to replace three panes in the window.

"We've had doors kicked in and our neighbours have as well.

"Over the last year it's just been ridiculous."

The householder, who praised police for their quick response to the incident, hoped the repair bill would be covered by insurance.

He said the wheelie bin, which was a standard size, had no markings on it, although the family would contact the council to see if they could find out the owner.

As a result of the incident, three people were arrested by police the following day.

They were taken to Swindon Gablecross Police Station and bailed until February 2 for further enquiries.

The police said they were targeting troublemakers in the area and would be taking positive action to put a stop to the problem across Calne.
