Quiet New Year

From the The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald, first published Thursday 5th Jan 2006.

DEVIZES police reported a trouble free New Year in the town. Inspector Peter Bowerbank said there were no alcohol related arrests.

He said: "It was unbelievably quiet, a lot quieter than I expected. In fact it was probably quieter for us than on a normal Friday and Saturday night.

"I don't think the weather helped. It was very wet and cold.

Paul McDonald, landlord of the Bell by the Green pub and chairman of Devizes Pubwatch, said: "There tends not to be trouble at New Year's Eve due to the pubs closing at different times. The extended licensing hours is having a positive effect."
