Leave us this pool to exercise

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 31st Jan 2006.

ACCORDING to their website the council proposes to cut back the public opening hours at the Milton Road Health Hydro by 700 per cent, opening for just five hours every Thursday evening.

As a regular patron of the Milton Road pool swimming there during my lunch hour three times a week I find the proposal ludicrous.

But not quite as ludicrous as their suggestion, also on the website, that I would use the Oasis instead for my recreational swimming needs.

Through regular attendance at Milton Road Health Hydro last year, in conjunction with a diet, I managed to lose three stones and improve my quality of life.

There are also other people who regularly attend who swim to help with heart conditions, diabetes or just for the pleasure of keeping healthy.

Is it really so much to ask for our council to dig deep to find a measly £25,000 to keep open one of the last places in the town centre where the people of Swindon can exercise?
