From the Salisbury Journal, first published Monday 30th Jan 2006.
I WAS absolutely astonished to read (Journal, January 12) that the Still Waters and Mistral new build development in Quidhampton had been commended in the Salisbury Civic Society New Building 2005 Awards.
I do agree that the development boosts courageous design. However, does the development fit into the village and mirror the style of the architecture in the area? No, it does not!
Does the development provide affordable housing for new families (since Salisbury has a major shortage in this area)? Certainly not!
All this aside, surely green issues or, to use the buzz word in modern construction, sustainability' should also be a huge priority for new developments in this day and age.
In my reasoned opinion, this development is not award-worthy in this regard.
Award panels, planners, property professionals and the like should seriously consider the requirements of the current climate.
We need to make sure that we do not lose the character of our villages by building countless large, concrete-block, box-like housing units.
I feel very strongly that it is absolutely imperative that our new developments are sustainable, affordable and in keeping (using local materials/trade skills) with the surrounding areas.
These types of project are the ones that should be getting the plaudits.
