Benefits from anti-pollution project to filter through to Avon

A £25m project to curb agricultural pollution of rivers and waterways will benefit the famous Hampshire Avon, which flows through south Wiltshire and west Hampshire.

The Avon is one of several rivers earmarked by Defra as a priority area for action.

A range of measures will be carried out designed to improve farm practices and reduce water pollution from agriculture.

Defra has appointed specialist advisers who will meet farmers, hold workshops and give demonstrations showing how farmers can reduce pollution.

Agricultural pollution can have serious effects on rivers, lakes and waterways, as it can cause an overloading of nutrients and a reduction in oxygen levels. Such pollution affects plant and weed growth, increase levels of siltation affect fish breeding.
