At Easter, the traditional Devizes to Westminster canoe race was again as popular as ever with many crews, young and old, battling their way to London via canal and river.

But a fearsome swan protecting its young made the journey even more perilsome than usual.

This picture by freelancer Bob Naylor captures the moment when one unsuspecting team were given the fright of their life.

It was a good incentive for them to paddle even faster.

But luckily no-one was hurt by the bird's over protectiveness.
