Credit where credit’s due

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Saturday 28th Jan 2006.

The article It's A Bit Of A Dust-up made me read it again and again and put a smile on my face.

I recently wrote a letter, which you kindly printed, in reference to Covingham Shopping Centre about the state of the seating areas, the flagstone paving that requires replacing or repairing and, of course, the bushed fence area.

Well, it is nice to read that the council will have these problems sorted by May.

Is it not funny Covingham parish councillor Derek Benfield has been campaigning for this work to be done for years and that I, also a parish councillor, have been asking the same for some months now.

Only at December's Covingham Parish Council meeting we were told by the chairman that: "This had been a topic for several years and on each occasion the response was the same that the money was not available for such work."

So we wait and see with much interest.

But if this work is done, it can only be due to the hard campaigning undertaken by Mr Benfield and ward councillor Maureen Dilley, who has a petition in the area asking residents to sign to get this work underway.

If Coun Dale Heenan and Coun Smith would like to look at Coun Dilley's website they would know this.

The only worry for Coun Dilley is once they read her website they will tell the Covingham residents that this has been their idea and campaign, which I can assure you it has not.
