From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Saturday 28th Jan 2006.
I DID not know that the council was trying to close Milton Road Baths to the public, presumably to turn it into a private, expensive club.
All the Railway Village facilities were built for the common working man so why should we have another facility taken away from us?
There is very little in Swindon for the working class. Parks left to ruin, no tennis, cricket or football grounds and a sad collection of shops.
If we are doing so well, where is the money going? Certainly not down to the poorer section of the town, the ones that can't afford cars or fees for expensive gym clubs or private tennis clubs. There are a lot of us you know!
Swindon is too busy demolishing buildings and flinging up yuppy type flats and getting rid of our police station to think about the welfare of the under-dogs.
And as for the remark that was made to me that the homeless were taking showers at the Baths . . . well why not? I'd rather have a clean homeless person than a dirty one.
And I had been considering going down to the Baths myself as the council won't give me a shower and I can't get out of the bath.
J GIBBARD.
