Hitler’s ban

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Saturday 28th Jan 2006.

W Newson made some good points defending the rights of smokers (letters Adver, January 26).

Of course, the sensible answer is to allow pubs and clubs to choose whether they allow smoking or not. Adequate protection for bar staff can be provided by a no smoking policy for customers at the bar itself, and adequate ventilation.

It is a mystery to me why a Labour government wishes to interfere in our private lives in this way. Cars are dangerous as well, are they going to be banned?

However, Mr Newson did make one factual error when he said that Hitler never stopped his supporters from smoking.

In fact, all uniformed police and SS officers were banned from smoking on duty in 1939 and there was a total ban on smoking in Nazi party offices.

These restrictions were later extended to the general public, including rules against smoking indoors.
